FLOOD PREPAREDNESS UPDATE (SPRING 2026)

PUBLIC NOTICE – FLOOD PREPAREDNESS UPDATE (SPRING 2026)
Village of Carmacks wishes to inform residents that the Government of Yukon has identified an elevated flood risk in our region for the 2026 spring season.

Full details are available from the Government of Yukon at:
https://yukon.ca/en/news/yukon-government-releases-flood-and-wildfire-outlook

Key highlights:

  • High risk of ice jam flooding on the Nordenskiold River at Carmacks

  • Moderate risk of flooding on the Yukon River and Nordenskiold River during peak snowmelt

  • Flood conditions will depend on weather patterns, snowmelt timing and precipitation

What this means for Carmacks:
While flooding is not guaranteed, current conditions increase the likelihood of higher water levels and possible localized flooding. Residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas should remain alert during spring breakup.

Preparedness measures underway:

  • Coordination with Yukon Government and emergency responders

  • Review of local emergency response plans

  • Pre-positioning of flood response materials such as sandbags and equipment

  • Ongoing monitoring of river conditions and weather forecasts

What residents should do now:

  • Review or create a household emergency plan

  • Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit

  • Identify risks specific to your property

  • Stay informed through official updates and advisories
