Time off to vote on election day – October 17

Municipal elections will be held on Thursday, October 17 in Whitehorse, Teslin, Watson Lake, Faro, Carmacks, Mayo, Dawson and Haines Junction.

Under te Municipal Act, you are allowed 3 consecutive hours during the polling hours (8 am to 8 pm) to vote. If your work schedule doesn’t give you a full 3-hour block to go vote, you can take extra time off, with no loss in pay, to make sure you have 3 hours. Your employer can choose when you take this time off to reduce any disruptions at work.

If your workday ends after 5 pm, or if you’re a shift worker starting before 11 am, you might need extra time to vote. If that’s the case, please talk to your supervisor to arrange your time off while keeping disruptions to a minimum.
