Community Composting is Coming to Carmacks
Program Details:
-
Start Date: September 2024
- What You Can Compost: Fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, and small branches), and other organic materials.
- What You Cannot Compost: Meat, dairy products, oils, pet waste, and other non-organic materials.
- Collection Schedule: Initially, transfer station bins will be available at the VoC Regional Solid Waste Facility during operational hours for organic waste drop-off.
- Composting Bins: Each household will receive a complimentary composting bin. Distribution of bins will begin in August. Further details regarding bin collection will be provided soon.
- Educational Workshops: To ensure everyone is comfortable and informed about composting, we will be holding a series of workshops throughout August and September. These workshops will cover the basics of composting, tips for successful composting, and the benefits of reducing organic waste.\
Benefits of the Program:
- Environmental Impact: By composting, we can significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and create a nutrient-rich soil amendment for local gardens and green spaces.
- Community Health: Reducing waste helps keep our community clean and healthy, contributing to a better quality of life for all residents.
- Cost Savings: Lowering the volume of waste sent to landfills can reduce municipal waste management costs, ultimately saving taxpayer money.
