Winner of FireSmart Property Contest
Municipal Release: VoC FireSmart Property Contest Winners Announced
The Village of Carmacks is pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 FireSmart Property Contest, which concluded on September 20th. This initiative aimed to encourage residents to implement FireSmart principles on their properties, thereby enhancing community safety and resilience against fire hazards.
Contest Criteria and FireSmart Guidelines: Participants in the contest were judged based on their adherence to the FireSmart guidelines, which are designed to reduce fire hazards and increase property safety.
The key criteria included:
1. Vegetation Management: Removing flammable vegetation and maintaining a defensible space around structures.
2. Fire-Resistant Landscaping: Using fire-resistant plants and materials in landscaping.
3. Roof and Exterior Maintenance: Ensuring that roofs and exteriors are made of fire-resistant materials and are free of debris.
4. Woodpiles and Fuel Storage: Storing woodpiles and fuel at least 10 meters away from structures. 5. Emergency Access: Maintaining clear access for emergency vehicles. These measures not only contribute to individual property safety but also enhance the overall resilience of the community against wildfires.
The winners of the contest are as follows:
• 1st Place ($500 Cheque): Andrew Staples
• 2nd Place ($250 Cheque): Mike Wasylyk
• 3rd Place ($125 Cheque): Mervyn Johnson
Prizes can be claimed on September 26th after 1:00 PM at the Village Office.
